Why do my gums bleed? Read some tips to avoid it

61% of the spanish population suffers from gingival bleeding during the course of 2017. However, the risks of gingival bleeding and gingival diseases is still a pretty unknown topic for the vast majority of the population.

Causes of gingival bleeding

The lack of proper oral hygiene is the main cause of gingival bleeding. Bacterial accumulation causes calculus, which is the adherence of bacterial debris to the surface of our teeth.

This calculus causes bleeding, inflammation and gingival redness, symptoms that should alert us to visit the dentist, as they can evetually cause more severe gingival diseases, such as periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is classified into gingitivis, when the inflammation is limited to the gingival tissues, or periodontitis if we start loosing supporting bone around our teeth.

Moreover, other factors may influence the onset and progression of periodontal disease:

  1. Tobacco smoking, togehter with bad oral hygiene, incrases the risk for periodontal disease.
  2. Diseases such as diabetes, anemia o hepatitis can increase the risk to suffer bone loss
  3. The involuntary habit of clenching or grinding our teeth can cause trauma to our teeth and further bone loss
  4. Genetic factors
  5. Any disease that jeopardizes our inmunitary system may favor bone loss

How can you avoid it?

  • Keep a good daily oral hygiene, starting with the proper tooth brushing technique.
  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months. Your toothbrush is in constant contact with water and bacterial debris in our mouth. Make sure you change it often.
  • Use dental floss and interproximal toothbrushes: interproximal surfaces represent up to 40% of the total tooth surface.
  • Visit your dentist once a year for a check up and professional cleaning.
  • Don’t ever forget to brush your tongue: it can harvest up to 70% of the bacteria in our mouth.
  • Avoid smoking.
