When do adult teeth erupt?

The smile is one of the features that first strikes our attention when we meet someone. It is the way we choose to show us to the world. Having a beautiful smile is, in the end, having a healthy smile, a healthy lifestyle.

Baby teeth start to fall and be replaced with adult teeth at approximately 6 years old. The first molar and central incisors will be the first to make their appearance and gradually, all 32 teeth (including wisdom teeth) will erupt.

Odontopediatría

When adult teeth are erupting, space is often needed creating some malpositioning or crooked teeth. Consequentlly, the close supervision of a pediatric dentist is of key importance. The dentist will ensure all adult teeth are present, the sequence of eruption is adequate and will prevent future complications.

The period when baby teeth and adult teeth are simultaneously in the mouth is called “mixed dentition” and is a precious time to start educating our children on oral hygiene while we monitore the slow eruption of all adult teeth.

Adult teeth are namely stronger and bigger than baby teeth and need adequate care as they will hopefully remain in function all our lifetime. While adult teeth need to be taken care of, baby teeth should not be underestimated. Loosing baby teeth may lead to an inadequate development of the jaws that can cause to a lack of space for adult teeth.

Please come visit us with your little ones to make sure they are carefully replacing their baby teeth and making their transition to adult teeth adequately. We can help your children achieve a perfect smile!
