What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is a novel approach to straightening teeth. It is based on a set of clear aligners designed specially for you. These aligners are made of comfortable and virtually invisible plastic.

Following the instructions of your orthodontist, each set of aligners is changed every two weeks in order to slowly modify your teeth’s position.

The treatment duration depends on your initial clinical situation and the treatment goals set individually for you. The orthodontist will carefully examine you during the initial visit and will let you know an approximate duration of the treatment. Both, Invisalign and conventional brackets have a similar treatment duration.

Why is Invisalign better than conventional orthodontics?

Invisalign’s most evident advantage, and the main reason why our patient’s ask for it, is esthetics: people will hardly notice you are doing ortho because it’s virtually invisible!

The aligners are very comfortable compared to brackets. A slight discomfort is experienced very time we change a new set of aligners but this discomfort resolves in a couple of hours and never requieres medication.

Furthermore, it is a very hygienic orthodontic treatment. The aligners can be removed every time we brush our teeth, making it easier to have a healthy gum. This is specially important in periodontally compromised patients.

Last but not least, Invisalign usually requieres you to see the orthodontist less frequently than with conventional orthodontics and this can save you some time!

Invisalign and the intraoral scanner Itero

One of the most valued advantages of the synergy between the intraoral scanner from Itero and Invisalign is that a virtual representation of the ideal position of the teeth can be done instantly through the 3D ClinCheck software.

Impressions have to be made before the orthodontic treatment starts to register the baseline position of teeth and to determine the diagnosis and treatment plan. Impressions have been traditionally taken with uncomfortable pastes but we have a quicker and much comfortable solution nowadays: the intraoral scanner. This technology allows us to record the patient with an intraoral camera.

Using the ClinCheck software, an instant correction of the crooked teeth can be done to let the patient see the final result without initiation the actual treatment. This way, the patient analyses the final result of his/her treatment and can activelly participate of the change from the beginning.

1. How do I take care of my aligners?

As we previously mentioned, the aligners are changed approximately every two weeks. You should wear your aligners as much as possible, minimum 21 hours a day. This means you will only be able to remove the aligners every time you eat, to be able to chew adequately, and when you brush your teeth, to thoroughly clean between all your teeth.

Every time you remove them, you should clean them with your toothbrush and conventional toothpaste. You may observe that the aligners start changing it’s color after some time…don’t worry…you get a new set every two weeks!

2. Do I have to follow any guidelines after treatment?

Once your orthodontic treatment is completed, it is crucial to avoid any relapse! This means, we need to fix the teeth position to maintain it over time. Orthodontist refer to this as retention. Retention can be fixed or removable.

Fixed retention consists of bonding a small wire to the inside of you teeth.
Removable retention consists of a set of trays that we will use every night. This retention has to be used always. So if you experience any trouble with the wire or you loose your night trays, call us! We will help you to avoid any tooth movement.
